Isaura is a project consisting of three posters based off of the city with the same name from Italo Calvino's classic book Invisible Cities. I was tasked to design an iconic landscape, usable currency, and memorable souvenir inspired and fit for this fictional city

Mood Board

Taking note of the key words in the description of Isaura, I created mood boards for the landmark, currency, and souvenir. Focusing on the balance of light above and the tunnels below, as well as the motif of water, I designed a cathedral that sits above water. Representing the wells that the citizens of Isaura dug, the currency consists of medallions meant to be thrown down the wells. Reflecting the city that moves upwards, the souvenir is a kaleidoscope, a toy containing mirrors and pieces of colored glass or paper whose reflection can be seen when pointed up towards the light.

3D Modeling

I built the cathedral, symbolizing the two religion of Isaura, using Cinema4D. Taking inspiration from various religious monuments, I settled on making a singular architecture that sits above the water. The first level contains a well where the citizens can toss medallions in offering to the gods below, indicating the importance of the aqueducts to the society. The second floor, airy and filled with light, is a space for the citizens to feel the rise of air like the gods that rises from the buckets over the edge of the wells.

Branding

Using Adobe Illustrator and Cinema4D, I designed the mandala shaped logo that appears in the cathedral, medallion, and kaleidoscope. I tested out different fonts that emulated the mystic and ancient feel of the city and settled on Stonehenge. I first created a vector design of the logo and coin before 3D modeling them. The coin has the latin words mille puteus, meaning a thousand wells, and aquavitae which is the water of life. Every detail is taken in consideration to the description of the city.
